North City Community Garden

Just two months ago it was a neutral parcel of grass. Today the soil is being tilled, watered (no problem with our rain), turned and cultivated. Different types of lettuce is growing and carrots have been planted along with broccoli and squash.
Sonlight Church generously donated the northern portion of grass that runs along Aaron Dr. in Lynden for a community garden. They’ve also donated labor to help the garden take shape, plus they will donate the water to irrigate the land. Fliers were handed out to the neighborhoods around the area of Aaron Dr. to Vinup Road, and some houses near Bender Field, inviting all to participate in the Garden. So far this community effort has definitely fostered good communications and a sense of togetherness.
There are approximately 28 families taking part in the garden. Each family has the option of choosing the size of their plot as well as the location. That’s all it takes. They are now cultivating their personal garden. There will also be a communal plot in which corn or squash will be planted, and anyone who wishes to harvest can help with the maintenance of that plot. When harvest time comes, they may take a few corn or squash. We also plan to have raised beds along the sidewalk and these will be designated for the residents of Lynden Health Care Center, who may need to be in a wheelchair to garden.
People working side by side. Total strangers getting together asking for advice, gaining wisdom, literally digging in together. This is community!
